About Mary Floyd Tallmadge
Mary Floyd was born on March 6, 1764, in Mastic, Suffolk County, New York, to Hannah Jones Floyd and Major General William Floyd, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. She married Colonel Benjamin Tallmadge in March of 1784. Mary dedicated her life to raising her children and supporting her husband's military and political efforts. Benjamin is well known for his military service, his involvement as leader of the Culper Spy Ring as well as his service in the U.S. House of Representatives. Benjamin also served as Litchfield's postmaster from 1792 to 1801. Mary died in Litchfield, Connecticut, on June 3, 1805, at the age of 41. She is buried beneath tall pines in beautiful and serene East Cemetery, next to her beloved Benjamin.
Every Independence Day, the Mary Floyd Tallmadge Chapter, NSDAR, holds their Fourth of July ceremony in East Cemetery and pays respect to the Tallmadges. The annual event is open to all.
